Role Overview
AEW is looking for a Head Mechanical Design to lead the design and development of mechanical systems for its products. The individual will oversee the entire product lifecycle, from concept to design validation, ensuring products are optimized for manufacturing and performance. This includes enhancing existing products such as smart energy meters and designing numerous new products. The role requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership skills, and strategic vision to drive innovation and ensure product quality.
Key Responsibilities
Product Design and Development
Lead the conceptualization, design, and development of mechanical systems for new and existing products.
Optimize designs for functionality, durability, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability (DFM).
Use advanced CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, NX , AutoCAD and other such tools) to create 3D models and detailed technical drawings.
Research and incorporate new materials, manufacturing methods, and technologies into designs.
Develop innovative solutions to improve existing products or create entirely new ones.
Validation & Analysis
Perform structural, thermal, and mechanical simulations to validate designs.
Conduct Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and other quality assessments to identify potential weaknesses and improve reliability
Product Development for Multi-Segment Portfolio
Work closely with electrical and software engineering teams to ensure mechanical components integrate seamlessly with other systems.
Liaise with manufacturing teams to ensure designs can be efficiently produced and assembled.
Project Management
Oversee timelines, budgets, and resources for design projects, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
Provide regular progress updates to stakeholders and address potential challenges proactively.
Tooling & Prototyping
Oversee the creation of prototypes and the design of tooling required for production.
Test and refine prototypes to meet performance and safety standards.
Team Leadership
Manage and mentor a team of embedded engineers, hardware designers, and software developers.
Promote a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning within the team.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
Work closely with product management and R&D teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize designs for production scalability.
Desired Qualifications and Skills
Education:
Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields.
Experience:
12–15 years of experience in mechanical design, with a focus on product development.
Proven track record of designing products for manufacturability (DFM) and performance optimization.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and/or NX.
Strong knowledge of DFMEA, FME, and other quality analysis tools.
Strong knowledge of PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), DFM (Design for Manufacturability), DFA (Design for Assembly), DFR (Design for Reliability), DFE (Design for Environment), DFD (Design for Durability), DFT (Design for Testing)
Expertise in materials engineering, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
Understanding of energy metering standards (HT/LT meters), water/gas metering systems, and IoT product design.
Leadership Skills:
Strong ability to lead a multidisciplinary team and manage multiple projects.
Effective communication and collaboration skills for cross-functional teamwork.
